A Rejoinder to the Circulating Narrative Against Dr. Bala Bello Kakara.
By: Umar Aliyu
In an era dominated by social media, narratives spread with astonishing speed. A single emotional story can travel across communities and platforms within minutes, shaping public perception before facts are carefully examined. Unfortunately, when such narratives involve respected public figures, they can quickly transform into instruments of reputational damage. Recently, a personal account has been circulating online concerning Dr. Bala Bello Kakara, a distinguished technocrat who once served as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and held senior responsibilities at the Nigerian Export-Import Bank.
The account describes an unpleasant personal encounter involving a job seeker who claims to have experienced humiliation while attempting to seek assistance for employment many years ago. While the story is narrated with emotion and personal pain, it is important to approach such claims with balance, reason, and fairness especially when they are used to shape public opinion about an individual whose professional life has spanned decades of service.
First and foremost, it must be clearly stated that a personal recollection does not automatically amount to an objective account of reality. Human interactions are often complex and subject to interpretation. What one person experiences as humiliation may be perceived by another as firmness, discipline, or a misunderstanding of circumstances. When stories are told from a single perspective, they inevitably reflect the emotions and biases of the narrator.
In the circulating narrative, the entire accusation rests solely on one side of the encounter. There is no verification, no corroborating evidence, and no attempt to seek clarification from Dr. Bala Bello Kakara himself. Yet the story is being widely shared in a manner that invites the public to draw sweeping conclusions about his character. This raises an important question: should the reputation of a man built over decades be judged based on an unverified personal anecdote?
Fairness demands a more thoughtful approach.
Another critical issue highlighted by this story is the misunderstanding surrounding requests for assistance and entitlement. Seeking help from someone in a position of influence is not unusual. In many societies, personal referrals often serve as gateways to professional opportunities. However, asking for help does not create an obligation on the part of the person being approached.
No executive, public servant, or professional leader is under any duty to provide employment to everyone who seeks their assistance. Institutions such as the Nigerian Export-Import Bank operate within structured recruitment systems designed to maintain professionalism and meritocracy. Jobs in such institutions cannot and should not be distributed based solely on personal connections, emotional appeals, or sympathy.
To expect otherwise is to misunderstand the fundamental purpose of professional institutions. Positions within national financial organizations are tied to responsibilities that affect the broader economy. Recruitment processes must therefore be guided by competence, qualification, and fairness.
Furthermore, the circumstances described in the story itself raise questions about preparation and professionalism. According to the narrative, the individual who visited for assistance did not have his curriculum vitae readily available when meeting the senior executive. Instead, the document had been left outside in a car at the gate of the residence.
In professional environments particularly when meeting a high-ranking official to discuss employment basic preparation is essential. Important documents should be readily accessible, and the meeting should be approached with seriousness and clarity. If a senior executive expresses disappointment about such preparation, it should not immediately be interpreted as cruelty or humiliation. It may simply reflect the expectations of professionalism that govern high-level institutions.
It is also necessary to remember that individuals occupying senior positions in organizations like the Central Bank of Nigeria often operate under extraordinary pressure. Their responsibilities involve complex financial decisions, policy considerations, and demanding schedules. Time is limited, and their interactions are frequently constrained by professional obligations.
Under such circumstances, a meeting that feels brief, abrupt, or even dismissive to one party may simply reflect the intense demands placed upon the other. Public figures cannot realistically meet every request for assistance with unlimited patience and attention.
None of these observations diminish the emotional disappointment that may arise when someone feels rejected or misunderstood. Being turned away from an opportunity especially after travelling a long distance can be painful. Yet personal disappointment should not be transformed into a narrative designed to portray another individual as inherently arrogant or malicious.
It is also important to consider the broader professional history of Dr. Bala Bello Kakara. His career within Nigeria’s financial and development institutions has been long and distinguished. Rising to the role of Deputy Governor at the Central Bank of Nigeria requires exceptional expertise, years of dedicated service, and the trust of national leadership.
Such achievements are not the result of chance or favoritism. They are earned through sustained competence, professional discipline, and a commitment to institutional integrity. It would therefore be deeply unfair to reduce the legacy of such a career to a single disputed encounter narrated many years later.
Public discourse must resist the temptation to define individuals solely by isolated stories. Human beings are complex, and their character cannot be accurately measured by one moment or one interaction.
Indeed, those who have worked in demanding institutions understand that firmness and discipline are often misunderstood. Leaders who maintain high standards may sometimes appear distant or strict, especially when dealing with requests that fall outside formal procedures. Yet such discipline is often necessary to preserve the integrity of institutions.
Another dimension of the story that deserves reflection is the use of personal hardship as a moral argument for employment. While circumstances such as being an orphan or facing economic difficulty naturally evoke sympathy, professional recruitment cannot be based on sympathy alone. If positions in national institutions were distributed solely on the basis of emotional appeal, the principle of fairness would collapse.
Merit-based systems exist precisely to ensure that opportunities remain open to all qualified individuals, regardless of personal background. Replacing merit with patronage would only deepen inequality and undermine institutional credibility.
The broader public must therefore exercise caution when encountering emotionally charged narratives online. Social media platforms often amplify stories that provoke strong reactions. Outrage spreads quickly, and reputational damage can occur long before facts are examined.
Responsible citizens must ask critical questions before accepting such narratives as truth. Was the story independently verified? Has the other party been given the opportunity to respond? Are there witnesses or evidence that support the claims?
Without such scrutiny, society risks creating an environment in which reputations can be destroyed by a single viral account.
It is important to clarify that public figures are not beyond criticism. Accountability is essential in any healthy society. However, accountability must be rooted in credible evidence and fair evaluation, not in one-sided narratives driven by emotion.
Beyond the controversy itself, the story also offers a deeper lesson about life. Many individuals who later achieve success can recall moments when opportunities slipped away, when doors were closed, or when their efforts seemed unrecognized. These moments, painful as they may be, often become the experiences that shape resilience and determination.
Instead of allowing disappointment to turn into bitterness, such experiences can inspire individuals to pursue new paths, develop stronger skills, and ultimately discover opportunities that might otherwise have been overlooked.
The acknowledgment that only Allah ultimately determines the outcome of human efforts reflects an important spiritual perspective. Human beings plan and strive, but destiny unfolds according to a wisdom beyond human control.
For this reason, it is often wiser to reflect on past disappointments with humility rather than resentment. Turning personal grievances into public accusations rarely produces healing or constructive dialogue.
As a society, it is essential that we cultivate a culture of fairness in our judgments. We must resist the temptation to condemn individuals based on incomplete information or emotionally charged accounts.
Dr. Bala Bello Kakara like any public figure should be evaluated based on the totality of his professional contributions and his impact on national institutions. His roles within the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Export-Import Bank reflect years of dedication to strengthening Nigeria’s financial system.
History rarely judges individuals based on isolated anecdotes. It remembers the weight of their contributions, the institutions they helped build, and the influence they had on national development.
While personal experiences deserve empathy, they must not become the sole basis for public judgment. Fairness requires patience, balance, and intellectual honesty.
Only by upholding these principles can public discourse rise above emotional accusation and approach the dignity of truth.
